A weird thing happens when you turn thirty— the things you loved when you were ten turn twenty, and you start feeling really old. I realize that the abstract concept of things aging isn’t weird, but it really is bizarre to experience. You don’t realize it at the time, but when you’re ten you’re in the midst of one the most fascinating points of your life. You’re still a kid and, as a result, count on your parents for essentially everything, but you’re developing enough autonomy that you begin truly carving out your own identity. It starts with little stuff: you’re from a Twizzlers family but realize you prefer Red Vines; your siblings love playing sports but you’d rather stay inside reading Harry Potter; or, perhaps most importantly, you realize that you’re developing a taste in music that’s totally unique to YOU! Sure, you still love it when Mom and Dad put on Paul Simon, and you can’t help but hum along when your little brother blasts The Goofy Movie soundtrack for the ten thousandth time, but you just discovered this new band called blink-182, and their guitars are fuzzy, and their drums are fast, and they sing like Michelangelo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and they say bad words, and suddenly you’re a different person than you were before.
To celebrate growing old but not growing up we decided to look back on the year 1999 and some of our favorite songs that are almost old enough to drink. One of the first things you might notice is that even though some of our favorite bands (New Found Glory, Jimmy Eat Word, The Get Up Kids, The Ataris, etc.) put out albums in 1999 we didn’t cover them. We talked about it a lot and ultimately decided that we wanted to be honest— none of us were cool enough to know Saves The Day when we were in 4th grade! We decided to cover four songs that we’ve had stuck in our heads for two full decades, songs that dug themselves into us and truly shaped us.
Thank you to the bands, engineers, & producers who created the original versions of these songs. Our music wouldn't exist without yours.
